Name: Doune Castle

NameShort: Doune Castle

Short Description

Prepare to be star-struck by Doune Castle. The 14th century stronghold is quite the celebrity, having appeared in Monty Python, Game of Thrones, and Outlander. Climb the battlements for views of distant mountains, and get your geek on as you discover familiar filming locations in and around the castle.

Description

Doune Castle is a remarkably well-preserved medieval structure with a mega-impressive Great Hall and a towering 100ft high gatehouse. The interior courtyard was used as Winterfell in the pilot of Game of Thrones, however the castle best recognised for its role as ‘Castle Leoch’ in the Outlander series; the home of Colum Mackenzie and his clan. The castle was heavily featured as various different castles in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Monty Python fans can request coconut shells from the reception to recreate their own comical scene from the film, or pick up an audio guide narrated by Terry Jones. Outlander fans will be pleased to know that Sam Heughan’s Scottish tones also feature on the audio guide. To top-off Doune Castle’s on-screen claims to fame, it will also appear in Outlaw King, the new Netflix film about Robert the Bruce.

Name: Culross

NameShort: Culross

Short Description

Culross is almost too cute to handle. The cobbles and colourful houses are picture perfect, and give a glimpse into village life hundreds of years ago. Culross is popularly featured as Cranesmuir in the Outlander TV series. Wander the palace and pretty streets in search of the filming locations.

Description

Culross sits on the Firth of Forth and has one of the oldest harbours in Scotland. The village’s 16th and 17th century architecture oozes historic charm, particularly the vibrant Culross Palace. The palace’s period garden is used as Claire’s herb garden at Castle Leoch in Outlander, and Geillis Duncan's house can be found next to the Mercat Cross; which is also where the wee boy had his ear nailed to a post for stealing. The witch trials in Outlander are not entirely fictional. Culross has a dark and sinister past, so don’t be fooled by its cute appearance. The Town House was where alleged witches were held prisoner and trialed, and in the 17th century so many women were accused of witchcraft, there wasn’t enough space to accommodate them all. Don’t worry, most of our passengers make it back to Edinburgh in one piece!

Name: Falkland

NameShort: Falkland

Short Description

Falkland is a fairy-tale village in the Kingdom of Fife. From its quaint wee buildings and pretty flower baskets, to the French renaissance palace, Falkland is a total charmer. The centuries-old streets are used regularly in the filming of Outlander, most recognisably as Inverness in the 1940s and 1960s.

Description

Wandering through the Falkland is like stepping back in time. Falkland became Scotland’s first conservation village in the 1970s, and its twenty-eight listed buildings are still looking mighty fine. The village’s star attraction is the 500 year old Falkland Palace; a stunning royal residence and a favourite country escape for Mary Queen of Scots and the Stuart Monarchy. The palace is also home to the world’s oldest real tennis court. Falkland’s has shot to worldwide fame thanks to hit TV series Outlander. The village first appears as 1940s Inverness, where Claire and Frank meet the mysterious Mrs Baird and Reverend Wakefield on their second honeymoon. It is from the window of the Covenanter Hotel – which appears as Bairds B&B – that Claire sees the ghostly figure of Jamie standing by the Mercat Cross. There’s no guarantee you’ll see him too, but you will fall in love with Falkland.
