Itinerary
Name: Day 1: West Highland Adventure
Short Description: Our adventure starts as we leave Edinburgh and head north-west. We journey through the lands of Stirlingshire, once home to the legendary Scottish warrior, William Wallace, before arriving at Doune Castle*. The castle starred as a filming location in world-famous TV shows such as Outlander, Game of Thrones, and the movie Monty Python! Pressing on, we dive into Scotland's beloved Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. Here, nature shows off in the form of epic mountain ranges, far-reaching lochs, and historical castles seamlessly blending into the West Highlands. We continue south to the enchanting ruins of Kilchurn Castle at Loch Awe to wander along its peaceful shores. Lunchtime awaits us in the pretty town of Inveraray, with time to explore at your own pace. Why not visit Inveraray Castle (summer only, open Thursday – Monday, see notes for winter closure), or if you're feeling brave, you can venture into the narrow corridors of Inveraray Jail and step into the shoes of a 19th-century prisoner. This jail is renowned as one of the world's best-preserved courtrooms and prisons! Next on our journey is the awe-inspiring Rest and Be Thankful viewpoint, an incredibly magical picnic and beauty spot. From here, we soak up amazing views of the Arrochar Alps before heading to the final stop of our day: the village of Luss on the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond. Designated as a conservation village, you will find that Luss has some of the finest traditional Scottish architecture and natural features around. As our Scottish adventure draws to a close, we arrive back in Edinburgh in the evening. *Castle closures: Doune Castle may occasionally close for estate or filming activities (please check availability when booking). Inveraray Castle is closed for winter from 27 October 2026 to late March 2027.

Prepare to be star-struck by Doune Castle. The 14th century stronghold is quite the celebrity, having appeared in Monty Python, Game of Thrones, and Outlander. Climb the battlements for views of distant mountains, and get your geek on as you discover familiar filming locations in and around the castle.
Doune Castle is a remarkably well-preserved medieval structure with a mega-impressive Great Hall and a towering 100ft high gatehouse. The interior courtyard was used as Winterfell in the pilot of Game of Thrones, however the castle best recognised for its role as ‘Castle Leoch’ in the Outlander series; the home of Colum Mackenzie and his clan. The castle was heavily featured as various different castles in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Monty Python fans can request coconut shells from the reception to recreate their own comical scene from the film, or pick up an audio guide narrated by Terry Jones. Outlander fans will be pleased to know that Sam Heughan’s Scottish tones also feature on the audio guide. To top-off Doune Castle’s on-screen claims to fame, it will also appear in Outlaw King, the new Netflix film about Robert the Bruce.

NameShort: Loch Lomond
Loch Lomond has the largest surface area of any loch or lake in the UK, and even has a famous song written about it! Loch Lomond is the epitome of natural beauty, from the stretch of water and its many islands, to the bonnie banks and surrounding mountains.
Loch Lomond & The Trossachs was Scotland’s first national park, and is still the most popular. Loch Lomond is the centrepiece, and it certainly doesn’t do things by halves; it’s massive, the scenery is stunning and the walks are epic. The loch is 24 miles along, and was a sea loch until the last ice age. Loch Lomond is the ultimate Scottish eye-candy, with limitless bonnie views for you to feast your peppers upon. The loch is home to 22 islands and 27 islets (wee islands), including a row of islands across the loch which make up the Highland Boundary Fault Line. This geological divide between the Highlands and Lowlands is best photographed from Conic Hill, which offers spectacular vistas for not too much effort. Once you’ve seen enough by land, it’s time to take to the water in a canoe for a whole new perspective of the loch.
