This special period is known in these parts as ‘Simmer Dim’, and we will experience the night-long twilight at Sumburgh Head Lighthouse and Nature Reserve. Visit several truly amazing ancient sites and learn about the history, myths and legends which surround these wildly beautiful islands. Delve into Shetland’s Viking heritage and visit the Up Helly Aa Exhibition in Lerwick. We will stop at the fascinating Braemar Highland Games Centre on our way back to Edinburgh. | ||

Itinerary
Name: Day 1: Edinburgh to Lerwick
Short Description: We depart our capital city of Edinburgh at 08.00am and make our first stop at the iconic Forth Bridge, which opened in 1890 for the passage of trains heading north. We travel onwards through the Kingdom of Fife, taking in the beautiful coastal scenery, before stopping at the charming university town of St Andrews. We journey north to Dunnottar Castle, which is dramatically perched over the North Sea, before boarding the ferry in Aberdeen for our overnight sailing to the Shetland Islands.

Spend the night soaking up the atmosphere in the local pubs.

Next, we wander through Jarlshof; one of Scotland’s finest and best-preserved prehistoric sites before heading back to the hotel to freshen up and have dinner. We finish our journey at the Sumburgh Head Lighthouse; an iconic location with sweeping cliffs and stunning sea. Exclusively ours for the evening, enjoy a guided tour, traditional music and sample some of Shetland’s local specialities. Spending the summer solstice in such a far-flung location, surrounded by the vast North Sea and its wildlife, is an experience which will last a lifetime

Short Description: After breakfast, we venture north to discover the ancient Tingwall, once home to Shetland's earliest parliament. Soak up the last of the island scenery at the beautiful Lunna Bay. We head back to Lerwick for lunch before boarding the overnight ferry back to mainland Scotland.

Name: Day 6: Aberdeen to Edinburgh
Short Description: Back on the mainland, we make our way through scenic Royal Deeside, passing Crathie Kirk; the Royal Family’s place of worship when at their Highland residence. We also visit the resting place of John Brown; Queen Victoria’s personal attendant and close friend - made famous in the movie Mrs. Brown, starring Billy Connolly. As a final WOW, we will visit the Braemar Highland Games Centre. Housed in the stunning Duke of Rothesay Highland Games Pavilion, the new centre offers a fascinating exhibition exploring the history of the annual Highland Games in Braemar held in September each year. We will then make our final drive travelling through the Cairngorms National Park. Arrive back into Edinburgh at approximately 5.30pm.
